It is true we forget to lean on God when it most counts. We try to substitute the Lord with other things and depend on modern idols. While I would agree that in extreme cases there are people who "suck" too much resource from others around them, I do not believe this leaching metaphor should be applied to those who are looking for help... For instance, our students come to us when they have questions. Do they suck? Yes and No, they are young and naive and we are there to help them with their questions. The act of asking for help and understanding should not, in my opinion, be equated to a negative act. Same goes for us adults. Do I need to go to my Bible more often. YES! But does relying on another Christian for support and help in faith constitute as "sucking?" I don't think so. These are just my thoughts on this sermon. The metaphor, for all it is worth, does make sense, but I feel a younger Christian or someone new to the faith could come away from this with more questions, and maybe even feel intimidated to go out there and get clarification and much needed advice.
ReplyDeleteCierra, thank you for your excellent thoughts. I agree that those looking for help should not be labeled in a negative way. Perhaps Francis Chan was trying to compel Christians who seem "lazy" into more of a pro active frame of mind.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad this was the devotional. I love Francis Chan he spoke at my college all the time. I find that when life gets truly muddy and I am overwhelmed.. man I forget my Lord and savor is right before me. What an interesting and truly thought provoking- I think leaning on those around you is important, there are boundaries ALWAYS and we are to always establish boundaries with those around us, but God calls us to be in community and that means leaning on those around us!! Relying on those around us, are vital I believe. God puts people in our lives to lean on and when times get hard he wants others to walk through those hard times with us.
ReplyDeleteWhile I appreciate the message that we each need to take charge of "feeding ourselves" with The Word, and in our Faith, we cannot discount the importance of being fed by those who are wiser than we. If we rely completely on ourselves, we can forget that we don't "know everything"!
ReplyDeleteWhat a powerful message. He is very entertaining and very wise at the same time. I absolutely love this analogy. It holds true for many aspects of our lives, not just getting into the word, but being immature in our relationships, how we react to setbacks, how we parent. This is fantastic. Our society feeds this immaturity and dependency. Well said.
