Come and Get It!
"Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live."
Isaiah 55:3
Isaiah 55:3
I
peeked over the grape-stake fence that encloses our backyard. There I
saw folks running, jogging, walking, and shuffling around the track that
surrounds the park behind our home. I used to do that when I was stronger, I thought. And a wave of dissatisfaction washed over me.
Later, while reading the Scriptures, I came across Isaiah 55:1, “Come, all you who are thirsty,” and I realized again that dissatisfaction (thirst) is the rule, not the exception in this life. Nothing, not even the good things of life, can fully satisfy. If I had strong legs like a Sherpa (mountain-climbing guide), there would still be something else in my life that I’d be unhappy about.
Our culture is always telling us in one way or another that something we do, buy, wear, spray on, roll on, or ride in will give us endless pleasure. But that’s a lie. We can’t get complete satisfaction from anything in the here and now, no matter what we do.
Rather, Isaiah invites us to come again and again to God and the Scriptures to hear what He has to say. And what does He say? His love for David of old is “everlasting” and “faithful” (v. 3). And that goes for you and me as well! We can “come” to Him.

The world is earthy- it's full of sin and wants and selfish desires. This is a great reminder that God has a home for us in Heaven, and we need to remember to not let the earthly possessions overtake us because we need to remember what God has for us. This verse is wonderful Isaiah 55:1, “Come, all you who are thirsty,” we need to remember to be filled by our Lord not by this earth. There are wonderful things on this earth we just need to be careful about what we let into our world.
ReplyDeleteAnother wonderful reminder that we are "enough" in God's eyes. Getting caught up in our earthly desires can draw us away from that Peace (guilty!). But we must take strength and courage that Christ can quench our thirst!
ReplyDeleteI like the sayings of Corrie Ten Boom. Here was an individual who experienced losing everything of earthly value when incarcerated in a concentration camp. Her only hope was in Christ literally. And yet we are bombarded by messages completely contrary to the word of GOD. I have to continually remind myself of this false hope and instant gratification that permeates society.
ReplyDeleteQuotes from Corrie Ten Boom.
“You will find it is necessary to let things go, simply for the reason that they are too heavy.” and “Hold everything in your hands lightly, otherwise it hurts when God pries your fingers open.”
OUr lives are a constant adjustment to what we are expected to do and what we are able to do, mentally, physically and spiritually. We are constantly in the role of becoming; becoming more is exciting, becoming less is a grief. "I will count it all joy..." that is our goal.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great reminder to be content with what we have, what we can do, what we can enjoy and thrive in and not to be dwelling on things we cant have, cant do, etc. I always feel like there is so much to do in one day that I do not have time to worry about what I cant do. I just try and get stuff done and be the best I can be when I am doing it.
